India Wells Fargo Bank Correspondence
I purchased the 437 covers in this correspondence from eBay in two batches in January and February of 2002.
All are addressed to the Wells Fargo Bank in New York City from a small number of banks in India from 1980 to 1982.
There are 97 rates from 2.60 Rupees to 15.50 Rupees. The covers contain 2,476 stamps. At this point, I have completed
loading images for the first 50 covers (1 to 50 listing link below). I have loaded 150 of these covers, and arranged
them into three groups of 50 covers each. I simply do not have the energy to load all covers! Below the quick links,
pointing to the major pages for this section, I offer a brief summary of this correspondence.

Below is a typical Wells Fargo cover (No. 101) This is a 6 Rupees rate from Siddhapur. The stamps are placed on the back of the cover, and are postmarked by an India Circular Postmark. These postmarks tend to smudge and are often difficult to read. There often is an addition of the total rate on the cover. In this case, this cover has 3.25 handwritten in ballpen ink above the 1.00 Rps strip of five, and its likely the rest of the rate is written under this strip. The front of the cover has an India Square City Mark, the date and a registry number (815) in ballpoint pen. The U.S. Receipt postmark is to the left of the 0.25 Rp stamps and was applied lightly. |
The three most common Wells Fargo stamps are the 0.15 Rp Grain (162, or 6.5% of all stamps), 0.25 Chicks (189, or 7.6% of all stamps), 0.50 Rp Stork (216, or 8.7% of all stamps), the 1.00 Rp Cotton (683, or 27.6% of all stamps), and the 2.00 Rps Textiles (611, or 24.7% of all stamps). The cover below (No. 89) has a stunning vertical block of 12 0.50 Stork stamps and a single 0.15 Grain stamp, for a rate of 6.15 Rupees. |
The most common Wells Fargo rate is 5.50 Rupees, as shown fro Cover No. 385, shown below. Note the addition of the rate: 3.25 Rupees regular, plus 2.25 Rupees registered mail surcharge. Even the most common rate is only represented by 56 covers. The Inidan postal system has a very large number of rates for similar covers that must have varied only slightly in weight. 97 rates from 437 covers is a large number. The equivalent in a U.S., U.K., Japan, or Germany correspondence would likely be less than 20 total rates. |
The high values in the Wells Fargo correspondence are sometimes double marked with a high value canceller in the form of a cross, as shown below on a 10.00 Rps high value from Cover No. 106. |
The Wells Fargo covers also have auxiliary markings for air mail and registered use, as shown below for Cover No. 124. |
